World Chocolate Production

What problems are associated with global chocolate production? How is chocolate harvested?
Who does the harvesting?

  1. I read the about section of the documentary's website and it stated that children in Africa are being trafficked to the Ivory Coast to harvest the coacoa. Not all the children are trafficked, only some. But, on top of that, the children are not even paid for their efforts. They handle tasks that require them to lift heavy loads and carry around machetes. Some major chocolate producers: Nestle, Mars, and Barry Callebaut signed a pact that they would reduce child labor by 2008. In response to this movie the producer also received a letter from the Global Chocolate and Coacoa Industry stating that they have reduced such illegitimate actions.

  2. Too many chemical fertilizers and genetic technologies are applied on growing and processing the coca beans. It caused the diminishing of the diversity of the coca beans and environment degradation. I read some article about the labors in the coca bean farm in south America. Most of the labors turns out to be teenagers. They suffer from the low wage and long working hours.

  3. It is truly a shame to hear that these children are put through this. Children in Africa are continuously targeted and it is unfair. I now learned that they are trafficked in order to harvest cocoa to be sold. They are not always paid and work long hours. We need to work to stop the child labor that occurs too often. Most adults do not even work this hard. These children are treated so unfairly and it must be stopped.

  4. It is terrible to hear this and it appears my guesses from the last post are unfortunatly true. After just reading about this doccumentary i will try my hardest to avoid these corrupt companies and will do my best to raise awareness of this problem. I also think that there should be a campaign promoting this documentary next september and october in order to limit the companies profits during halloween in order to send a truly effective message.

  5. this truly is a sad thing to talk about. The children of Africa suffer more than alot of children anywhere and now they have to harvest cocoa beans. We should create a campaign that would promote saving the children from disease and starvation

  6. I think there are to many chemical fertilizers and genetic technologiesthat grow the coca beans. This causes the lack of diversity in coca beans and is sad that the diversity is lacking because of chemicals. I dont understand why food can't be grown naturally, it has always been done in the past and i don't see whats so wrong with continueing that today.

  7. The problem with the production and harvesting of chocolate is all the additives they put in it and also all the chemical fertilizers that they use to grow the cocoa beans. If food was grown without these things then it would be healthier for humans to consume and there would be less health risks involved.
